Moisture Mapping Monitoring Soil and Plant Moisture

How do you measure soil moisture without a sensor?

Moisture mapping is the process of measuring and mapping soil moisture levels. Soil moisture content is the amount of water in the soil, expressed as a percentage of the soil’s dry weight. It is a critical factor in plant growth and productivity. Soil moisture content can be measured using a variety of methods, including:

  • Tensiometers
  • Moisture meters
  • Neutron probes
  • Capacitance probes
  • Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) probes

Some of these methods require specialized equipment, but other methods can be used without a sensor. Gravimetric methods involve taking a sample of soil and drying it out in an oven to measure the amount of water lost.

Another method is to use a hydrometer. A hydrometer is a device that measures the specific gravity of a liquid. It is inserted into the soil, and the depth to which it sinks indicates the soil moisture content.
