Water Damage: Causes and Types

What is Water Damage?

Water damage refers to any harm caused to a property or its contents due to exposure to an excessive amount of water.

Causes of Water Damage

  • Natural Disasters: Floods, storms, and excessive rainfall can cause significant water damage to buildings and infrastructure.
  • Plumbing Failures: Leaks or bursts in pipes, water heaters, or fixtures can lead to water damage.
  • Appliance Malfunctions: Washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators can malfunction and cause leaks.
  • Roof Damage: Holes, cracks, or leaks in the roof can allow water to enter a building.
  • Broken Water Mains: Damage to underground water mains can result in extensive water damage to surrounding properties.

Types of Water Damage

Water damage is classified into three main types based on the source of the water:

1. Clean Water Damage

Caused by exposure to clean water, such as from a burst water pipe or a leaky faucet. This type of damage is generally less severe and easier to clean and repair.

2. Grey Water Damage

Caused by exposure to slightly contaminated water, such as from a washing machine or dishwasher overflow. This type of damage can pose a health risk and requires professional cleaning.

3. Black Water Damage

Caused by exposure to heavily contaminated water, such as from sewage backups or floodwaters. This type of damage is highly hazardous and requires immediate professional remediation.
